Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody Lets Clean Up- Blog Post #7
Anyone remember the clean up song from elementary school?^
Hey guys!
I can’t believe this is the last blog post, and our first year of university is almost done! Time really flies when you're doing assignments and exams eh?
Onto this week's blog post regarding addressing and removing graffiti in a community, there's many different roots you can take, but some I think are more effective than others.
Tumblr media
As much as I vouch for graffiti to be art in this course, a lot of it that we see daily is downright ugly, or in places that they shouldn’t be. Of course, there is graffiti that happens to be very beautiful, colourful and full of impact, but what needs to be addressed is the unwanted graffiti that makes a city or town seem more dangerous, unsafe, or unappealing. Especially like we talked about in previous blog posts about graffiti on store fronts, that this can make their business seem unappealing to the public eye if it is not intended to be there. In order to clean this graffiti up, volunteers would be very helpful, much like the Around Town Wash down many blogs discussed previously. Although I like the idea of volunteers, I think it's very hard sometimes to find volunteers. Here is where I think city workers would be useful. I know that last year, my older sister worked for the City of St.Catharines and cleaned up and took care of local parks and sports fields. Possibly, city workers could dedicate a day to washing down graffiti around town too. Since the city already owns things like power washers, ladders and the equipment needed, this could work very well, and it could be done annually or more often if needed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My home town also has what they call “Port Dalhousie Beautification and Works Committee”. This committee is made up of mostly retired men and women looking for activities to do in the summer and winter. They started the committee after many of the beautiful buildings in the town got tore down to make condos (which were never even built). Instead of letting our town slowly turn to dust, they decided that it needed to be fixed, and so the committee was formed. They do activites like put lights on trees during Christmas, make a hundred planters and hang them from streetlights, create signs for events, and much more. Maybe if Guelph got a committee like this, they could determine what graffiti should be removed, and could form a team to help remove it.
Tumblr media
In regard to stopping future graffiti once it is cleaned up, there's a few different ways. One is that you could install cameras in high traffic locations in order to track down an artist. If an artist is found, you could charge them a fine, or assign them public service hours of cleaning up graffiti, instead of sending them to jail. Also, I believe that if graffiti is to happen, if it is removed quickly the building is less likely to be struck again. The whole point of doing graffiti is to have it stay there. So, if it doesn’t stay, hopefully the business is less likely to be targeted again.
What do you guys think?

Sadly this is just another reason to carefully choose who you allow to work on your vehicle. This painted grill was damaged when a car wash employee sprayed a powerful caustic cleaner all over the front end of this vehicle. The damage is unfixable but we were able to improve the appearance enough to make the damage much less noticeable. Detailing is our business and we strive to always deliver the absolute best quality results in the safest possible manner. ______________________________ Scotty's Shine Shop *Complete Auto Detailing* *Paint Correction Specialists* *Modesta Paint/Wheel/Leather Coatings* *3M Pro Series/XPEL Ultimate Plus/Suntek Ultra PPF*

“Remanded 1 Week In Robbery Case,” Border Cities Star. December 1, 1930. Page 08. ---- WOODSTOCK, Dec. 1. - Harold Emmerson [TOP] and Douglas Whitsett, automobile thieves at present serving a two-year sentence in Portsmouth Penitentiary, appeared in county police court Saturday on a charge of robbery with violence at Thamesford on September 10, when Ralph C. Allia, assistant at Thomas’ service station, received a fracture of the skull as the result of a blow from a weapon, consisting of two two-inch iron nuts enclosed in a tobacco porch.
The accused were to have appeared for trial at Woodstock but the charge was not pressed. Recently, allowed following a petition from Thamesford residents to the attorney-general, a new trial was ordered. The accused, as they did not elect, were remanded for a week at the request of the defense, after presentation of the preliminary cases for prosecution.
[AL: Both Emmerson and Whitesett had been in Kingston Penitentiary for a month or so when they were taken back to Woodstock to stand trial on this charge. They had already been sentenced for theft of auto in Sarnia and Guelph, and they were sentenced on December 15, 1930, for robbery with violence. Both men were barely out of their teens when first sentenced. - 18 and 19. Emmerson was put to work in stone shed #2, making sand, and then was bounced to the mail bag shop. He did not get along with the officers at all, and was one of many inmates offended by reports that seemed to be for no reason: “I don’t mind getting a report for anything I do but when you get a report for nothing it gets you.” He was thrown in the hole within a week of arriving, and paddled for “making a noise” there, and further punishing for bad-mouthing the Deputy Warden. In mid-1932, he was punished with seven days ‘hard bed’ for, as he claimed “smiling and being cheerful in the shop” because the Instructor, George Sullivan, “wanted to take the grin off my face.” A powerful reminder that prisoners who seem too content with their lot are just as ripe for bullying and harassment as those who are too discontented - a sullen monotony is what was sought. Finally, Emmerson was reportedly pulled out of his cell and searched for possession of a set of ‘works’ ie a punk lighter but none was found - this appears to have been a deliberate strategy of the night staff. Emmerson joined the riot, supporting all their demands, and was released in July 1933. Whitesett (initially #1869) was quickly transferred to the Collin’s Bay camp in March 1931. He didn’t last there long and was brought back on June 13, 1931. He remembered that place “as being very hard but better fed...Warden Jackson...for the least breach of discipline we would get sixty or ninety days without tobacco.” Back at Kingston, he was put to work in the #1 Stone Shed, and racked up an impressive list of offenses against the rules - indeed, in Whitesett’s case, his defaulter sheet (a summary of all infractions dealt with in Warden’s Court) has survived, which provides an interesting example of just what inmates were punished for or bucking against. In February 1931 he was warned for “quarrelling with and striking another convict”; he lost 3 days remission “for blowing nose in wash basin and leaving for cleaner to clean” and the next week lost five days remission “for jumping over table to attack another convict” something he did again several days later at breakfast. For these he was sent back to Kingston. In July 1931 he caused a disturbance in the Chapel, booing the Chaplain, and in September was caught talking and laughing there - a week later he was punished for talking at work, and in October “gave insolence” to an officer. For these he lost about 20 days good time in total. Again, over December he laughed and caused a disturbance in church, gave insolence to an officer, and damaged his socks (to get new ones).  By 1932, he had ‘calmed down’ a little, and was reported, again and again, every month or so, for talking in church or laughing - and in June he refused to work with several other inmates, in August he started a fight with another convict, and then...the riot happened.  Whitsett certainly participated in the original demonstration on October 17, 1932, and felt generally satisfied with the results, but during the second demonstration on October 20, 1932, when the guards lost control - he started smashing his cell to provide protection from bullets being fired by the staff. One went through his coat, another ricocheted in his cell - he heard that the man next to him was hit in the cheek by buckshot, and then the whole range was drowned in tear gas and he was forced to hide under his mattress and blanket. The next day, when the officers at Warden’s court demanded why he rioted, he answered: “was it not sufficient reason after they starting shooting at us? Should I have stayed there and been killed?’ He stated during the investigation that he supported “all our demands” and specifically was frustrated by the lack of exercise and recreation.
Thanks to his defaulter sheet, we know Whitesett was written up shortly after the riot for having an iron bar under his bed - probably for self-defense, and later that month for insolence to an officer. He was transferred to the high security annex where most of the ringleaders were sent, where he continued to cause trouble. At the end of December, 1932, he and two other rioters attacked another inmate, #2580 Greenblood, who they thought was a rat (he wasn’t) and were all punished with hard bed. He continued to swear at, be insolent, loud talk, and sing on the range, and was written up multiple times for loitering, leaving his work place and refusing to work February 1933. Finally, on April 1 1933 he was implicated in an attempt to prevent officers from intervening in a fist fight between other inmates, and was transferred to punishment cells in the main prison. That seems to have taken the fight out of him, and he was released in July 1933.]

COVID-19: How to prepare at home for potential quarantine
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/covid-19-how-to-prepare-at-home-for-potential-quarantine/
COVID-19: How to prepare at home for potential quarantine
TORONTO — With more than 83,000 cases of COVID-19 worldwide and the World Health Organization raising its global risk assessment for contracting the illness to “very high,” health officials are advising people to prepare themselves for a potential pandemic.
Under the current global standards, people with suspected cases of COVID-19 are quarantined for 14 days. During this period, they’re not supposed to go out in public and interact with others for fear they will spread the respiratory virus.
This means that Canadians should have enough supplies in their home so they don’t have to leave at any time during a potential two-week quarantine period.
So how can you prepare? CTVNews.ca takes a look at some of the items that could be included in an emergency preparedness kit.
Food
Dr. Ronald St. John, the former director-general of the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response at the Public Health Agency of Canada, said it’s important for Canadians to think about what kind of food they need and would last for 14 days. He suggested the following items as examples.
Non-perishables: Rice, grains, pastas
Canned goods: Soups, vegetables, tomatoes
Fruits: Oranges and apples (good longevity if kept in a cool climate)
Snacks: Chips, crackers, nuts
Water (two litres per person per day)
Medication
In addition to food, St. John said Canadians should think about any medications they may need and visit their local pharmacy themselves or have someone else go for them to pick up items in advance.
If prescriptions are running low, restock them.
Any over-the-counter medications, such as pain relievers, cough suppressants, antihistamines
First aid kit
Hygiene
While Canadians are at the pharmacy, there are a few other personal hygiene items that may be worth stocking up on before potentially being placed under quarantine.
Tissues
Antibacterial soap
Toilet paper
Hand sanitizer
Disinfectant wipes
Feminine care products
Laundry detergent
Dish soap
As for face masks, Amy Greer, a Canada research chair in population disease modelling and associate professor at the University of Guelph, said Canadians don’t need to go out and buy them if they’re concerned about being quarantined.
“The average person doesn’t need to be stockpiling medical supplies like masks because their effectiveness is low,” she said. “We are already seeing problems with shortages of masks, which could lead to challenges for the people who actually need them the most.”
Instead, Greer said Canadians should develop a plan in case they or a family member is placed under quarantine so they will be prepared and not panicked.
“The thing to do is make a plan. What will you do if schools close? Will you be able to work from home? Do you have elderly family members who might need help? Those are things to think about now,” she said.
Baby items
St. John said Canadians shouldn’t forget about any other products they may need if they have a baby in the home. He said during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, a number of families under quarantine ran out of diapers and other such items during their isolation.
Diapers
Formula
Bottles
Baby food
Pets
As with babies, Canadians should also remember to think of their four-legged friends and their needs during quarantine.
Other supplies
Dr. Neil Rau, a medical microbiologist at Halton Healthcare Services and CTV’s infectious diseases expert, said Canadians should always have an emergency preparedness kit at the ready.
“A preparedness kit is good at any time, in the winter you could have an ice storm and knock out your power,” he told CTVNews.ca on Friday.
According to Public Safety Canada, there are a number of essential items Canadians should keep in their homes in the event of an emergency.
Flashlights (with extra batteries)
Can opener
Radio (with extra batteries)
Extra keys for the home and vehicle
Cash, travellers’ cheques, and change
Important family documents, such as identification, insurance, bank records
Candles, matches, and a lighter
WHO recommendations
On Friday, the World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued 10 recommendations for how people can protect themselves and others from COVID-19.
They include:
Regularly washing your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based rub
Regularly cleaning surfaces with a disinfectant
Make sure information you’re receiving about the infection comes from reliable sources
Avoid travelling if you have a fever or cough
Make sure to sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue
Take extra precautions if you’re 60 years old or older, such as avoiding crowded areas
If you feel unwell, stay home and call your local doctor
If you are sick, stay home, sleep away from your family, and different utensils than your family members
If you experience shortness of breath, immediately call your doctor and seek treatment
Discuss how to stay safe with your work, school or community grouping

Mold can be a big problem, growing in small, dark places. That is why the gutters and the intermediate zone of the tiles are usually the most affected places. At the same time, due to the difficulty in accessing them, they are not cleaned well.

5 Advantages Of Pressure Washing- Make A Neat And Clean Start!
When it comes to cleaning, efficiency comes first for most of us. The least possible effort, the least possible time, the cleanest possible result- these are the criteria that attract our attention. Pressure washing service in Guelph can meet these criteria and a few more. Read the blog to know all the details of this service.
Tumblr media
What is pressure washing?
Pressure washing involves using a high-pressure jet of water to remove pollutants such as mold, grime, dust and dirt from surfaces such as buildings. This is a common and very effective way to clean the exterior of a home. It essentially vaporizes grease and other types of dirt by combining the powers of hot steam and intense pressurization to create an effective way to remove the toughest stains.
Regularly using pressure washing can provide a host of benefits to homeowners. Here we will explore some of these benefits.
1.    Versatility
The different pressure forces of the high-pressure washing water jets allow a variety of uses to dislodge mud, mold or any other dirt on a variety of materials: wood, metal, brick, stone, concrete, etc. They are effective for washing a painted surface as well as for the more aggressive washing of a surface to be painted.
2.    Flexibility
With a powerful water jet, there's no need to twist around to reach a tight spot. Pressure washing can even reach places inaccessible to manual washing such as the inside of gutters, pipes, drains, French drains and grease traps.
3.    The absence of chemicals
High-pressure washing is a purely mechanical technique that dislodges dirt by the force of pressure. Mud, mold, leaves, dust, grease, oils and any traces are “pushed” away from the surface to be cleaned or out of the cavity being washed. No chemicals are needed, since friction does all the work. So you can use high-pressure washing without compromising your peace of mind about the safety and health of your family. It also reduces the risk that the structure of the cleaned materials will be damaged. And you limit the release of chemicals into the sewer system and nature.
4.    It’s precision
Because the force of the pressure is adjustable, pressure washing can be regulated to fit the material and the task. The force will not be the same for cleaning wood, metal or concrete. The power of the jet, as well as the washing time, can also be regulated according to the accumulated dirt. Thus, a dirtier area will receive more attention to end up as clean as an area with little dirt.
5.    Its ease
With pressure washing, you don't have to crawl into an awkward corner. Even better, you don't have to expend energy to scrub or use your muscles to dislodge dirt. The pressure does the work for you. And since you don't need to use any "cleaners" other than water, you don't need to rinse either for a flawless result.
Conclusion
Keeping the exterior of your home clean has several benefits, which we present to you here. For best results, opt for Keen 2 Klean Windows. We provide the best quality Residential Window Cleaning service in Burlington. A team of professionals awaits you today.
